GiGiFIT Run-Walk for Inclusion at Milwaukee’s Lake Park

As the weather tries to warm up, running and walking events return to Milwaukee. A Sunday morning, the 1st of May, supports a special group of people.

The GiGiFIT Run-Walk event at Lake Park is all about inclusion.

“Right now in our world, how much acceptance do we need? There’s never enough,” said Sarah Koehn, former chair of the board of GiGi’s Playhouse.

GiGi’s Playhouse Milwaukee has been providing free programs such as speech therapy, fitness, and education for individuals and families with Down syndrome for seven years.

“I’ve loved this organization since Daphne was born,” Koehn said.

The organization ensures that families like the Koehns have the support they need.

“The outpouring of support from other parents is crucial in coping with a diagnosis of Down syndrome,” Koehn said.

Dozens of people came out Sunday morning for a 5k walk, run or brisk run for Down syndrome.

“GiGiFIT is all about exercise and everything,” says Chad VandenHouten.

“I’m having so much fun with all my best friends!” said GiGi’s Playhouse member Dania Gibson.

The hope is to continue to grow the community of support one step at a time.

“We’re 99% volunteer-run. All of our programs are free. We have a lot of families that do a lot of fundraising. We have a lot of great organizations around Milwaukee that fund us. I’m just super proud,” Koehn said.
